Self-defense, protection dog training and martial art trainingI think of protection dog training as K9
martial arts Self defense and martial art training will develop some fighting drive and self-defense initiative in a person. In addition you can expect to benefit from greater agility and physical fitness. Self defense or martial arts training will also teach a person how to move in a balanced and coordinated manner, something that's important to good dog handling. A very valuable skill taught in martial arts is timing. Proper timing is one of the most important elements of dog training. I often have my doubts as to whether martial arts training alone will save one in a violent encounter. However it will sharpen one's skills to make the best use of one's innate talent for coping with a violent encounter. Just as, I don't believe that martial arts training alone will guarantee your safety, I don't think that protection dog training alone will guarantee your safety. There are too many variables. In martial arts, you will learn your strengths and weaknesses. No matter how much you train, until you are involved in a real situation, you don't know how you will really respond. The dynamics of that unique encounter will determine your response. Through martial arts, one can learn to better understand the dynamics of a violent encounter and how training can influence one's actions when threatened. With protection dog training, it is often possible, to make the dog believe a confrontation is real, this allows us to test and train for real life scenarios. Even with this training creditability, you still don't know 100% what your dog will do until a real situation occurs. Self defense is primarily making your self a hard target. I would suggest not making physical confrontation your first choice for defending your self or loved ones. Try to defeat your opponent before the encounter ever takes place. One of the big advantages of having a protection dog with you is that it makes you a much harder target to deal with. |
